SHOW DATES
Written by Woody Mitchell
Like a determined sapling punching through the earth, Wink Keziah & Delux Motel are sprouting a musical phenomenon that’s spreading beyond its regional roots. Shortly, Wink and the boys will load up the van for the Heart of Texas Quadruple Bypass Festival in Austin – the only unsigned band in the Carolinas to be invited. They’ll appear at Spill, 212 E. 6th St. on Thursday, March 16 at 6 p.m. – prime time in a prime venue. Why would a band from Charlotte, N.C, drive 1,400 miles for a gig that might not even cover expenses? “When I started this thing, I decided it had to be full-bore,” he says. “If I was going to do it, I was going to do it right.” A stop on the band’s Honky Tonk Nation Tour, the appearance at the Bypass Festival, an offshoot of the famed South By Southwest festival, will give the band a chance to shine for music-industry types who can give them a shot at the Big One. Wink’s Southern rock-brewed honky-tonk sound should fit that audience like a new Sunday suit. Bridging the Alternative and Americana genres, the band’s high-energy sound has attracted attention from industry types and fans alike. Wink is quick to throw a lot of credit to the talented Delux Motel band: Dennis Davis, guitar; Bob Barone, pedal steel; Michael Lother, drums; and Danny Owenby, bass. This seasoned crew transitions effortlessly between ronkin’ rock, soulful ballads and good ol’ honky-tonk in a powerhouse performance that never lets up. While Wink’s songbag is some 250 tunes deep, he and the band are currently riding on the strength of last year’s release “Delux Motel.” Featuring the cream of Carolina-region talent, including Jim Brock, Rusty Barkley, Uncle Grub, Robin Rogers and Joe Smith, it’s a unique collection of highlights and heartaches in the stories of the soul. Samples are available at Wink’s Website, http://www.winkkeziah.com. Wink’s come a long way from the old Sears Silvertone and Mel Bay chord book of his early life, but a renewed passion and commitment has propelled him from playing obscure honky tonks to Austin in a remarkably short time. After 14 years playing and recording in the Rollin’ Tumbleweeds, a stint with Adam’s House Cat, and six years and 2 recordings with the Houdauls, Wink decided to take a breather for a few years to define exactly what it was he wanted to do and how to go about doing it. In the past two years, he’s gone at it with a vengeance, relentlessly promoting, playing the honks, accumulating a fan base and building momentum. His single-minded pursuit and rapid success isn’t totallya one-sided effort – Wink’s wife, Greta, has been his biggest booster. “She’s been behind me 100%,” he says. “I couldn’t have done it without her.” Now that the train’s rolling, Wink Keziah & Delux Motel are picking up steam. “A lot of it’s about work, but that’s music,” Wink says. “The reason it’s caught on the way it has, is because it’s fun!” Woody Mitchell Charlotte Observer/ Live Wire E&T columnist
